With more than 18,000 members worldwide, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) is the leading organization of board-certified pathologists. The CAP serves patients, pathologists, laboratory professionals, and the public by fostering and advocating excellence in the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine worldwide.

The CAP’s Laboratory Improvement Programs, initiated in 1949, currently has customers in more than 100 countries. More than 7,700 laboratories are accredited by the CAP, and more than 20,000 laboratories receive proficiency testing (PT) provided by the CAP. Accreditation requirements set high standards that encourage continuous improvement in the quality of laboratory operations and management. The extensive PT offerings provide comprehensive programs and services to help laboratories consistently deliver accurate test results, monitor overall performance, and increase and sharpen staff skills.

The CAP advances the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine while empowering its members with education and opportunities.
